REPORT CARDS

Camanche Elementary is now on quarters for report cards. This means that you will now receive report cards for all students  k-12 at the same time. The first report card will be sent home on 10/27. As you know, we have been using a standards-based grading system for some time now, and this approach will continue. What we want to highlight is that all report cards will now consistently reflect student progress using the terms: BeginningDeveloping, and Meets Standards across all grade levels.

While this isn’t a completely new system, we want to ensure everyone understands how these terms reflect student progress toward end-of-year expectations.

A student will receive a “Meets Standards” only once they demonstrate consistent mastery of a skill or standard at the level expected by the end of the school year.

For example, one of the 4th grade reading standards is: "Orally read grade-level texts (e.g., poetry and prose) with accuracy, automaticity, and expression at an appropriate rate to support comprehension, self-correcting as necessary."

To meet this standard, a student needs to read 147 words per minute with 95% or greater accuracy by the end of 4th grade. If a student is not yet reading at that rate and accuracy, they would be marked as Beginning, or Developing, even if they are making steady progress.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support in helping all students grow. If you have any questions about your child’s progress or the report card system, please feel free to reach out.

FROM MRS. MUNSON

This week, take a few minutes to talk with your child about what it means to treat others with dignity and respect. At Camanche Elementary, respect is one of our important 3 R’s, and it’s a big part of how we create a caring and kind school community. Learning to respect others helps children build strong friendships and positive relationships at school, at home, and in the community. When kids understand how to treat others the way they want to be treated, everyone benefits!

Here are a few simple ways to start the conversation at home:

1.        What does respect mean? Ask your child what they think respect means. Share what it means to you too.

2.     Talk about real-life examples. Has your child every shown respect to someone else? How did it feel? Or has someone been disrespectful to them? What happened and how did it make them feel?

3.      Make it a family goal. Talk about ways your family can show respect to each other and others in your community. Small actions can make a big difference!

4.      Be a role model. Kids learn a lot by watching the adults around them. Show respect in your words and actions, whether you’re talking to your child, your partner, or others.

Let’s work together to help our students grow into kind, respectful people – at school and beyond!

Here are some books to read together this week:

·       Owl Moon by Jane Yolen

·       The Berenstain Bears Show Some Respect by Jan and Mike Berenstain

·       Respect and Take Care of Things by Cheri J. Meiners

·       Everyone Matters: A First Look at Respect for Others by Pat Thomas
