FROM MRS. MUNSON
This Week’s Social-Emotional Focus: Listening to Our Bodies. This week, we’re helping students learn that “our bodies can tell us when we’re starting to feel a big emotion.” Sometimes, we feel things in our bodies before we even know what emotion we’re feeling. For example, we might feel tight shoulders, a nervous stomach, fast breathing, or a racing heart. By paying attention to these body clues, kids can start to recognize their emotions and learn what they need to feel better. You can help your child by doing a quick body check together:
• Are your muscles tight or relaxed?
• Are you breathing slowly or quickly?
• Is your heart beating fast or steady?
These simple check-ins can help kids name their feelings and find healthy ways to cope – like taking deep breaths, asking for help, or taking a break. A great reminder to share with your child: “All feelings are okay. Some actions are okay, and some are not – but all feelings are okay!” Want to learn more about how emotions show up in our bodies and how to calm them? • Listening to My Body by Gabi Garci
• In My Heart: A Book of Feelings by Jo Witek
FLUENCY FOCUS: SUPPORTING YOUNG READERS AT SCHOOL AND AT HOME
Fluency is all about helping your child read more smoothly, confidently, and with expression – like they’re telling a story, not just sounding out words. When kids become fluent readers, it’s easier for them to understand and enjoy what they’re reading. At school, we’re working hard to build fluency through daily reading practice, engaging activities, and small group support. You can help at home by listening to your child read out loud, reading favorite books together, or even taking turns like you’re putting on a performance. Just 15 to 20 minutes of reading each day can make a big difference. The more fun and relaxed it feels, the more confident and excited your child will be about reading!
For parents of very young children who are not yet reading, it’s just as important – and wonderful – for them to hear you read aloud. Sharing stories aloud builds vocabulary, sparks imagination, and sets the foundation for future fluent reading. So, grab a favorite book, get cozy, and enjoy the magic of reading together!
