SCHOOL SPELLING BEE

Recently, CES had a spelling bee for students in grades 2, 3, and 4. The spelling bee was the first level in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program. Second grade students who participated were Brynne Hilgendorf, Jenna Lehmkuhl, Harper Mink, Mason Panich, Wyatt Petersen, Mckinley Schwandt, Autumn Snodgrass, and Garrett Snodgrass. Lincoln Petersen, Keegan Totten, and Brantley Weller were the third grade participants. Fourth grade spellers were Dylan Council, Lucie Krogman, Sophia Munson, River Murphy, Hattie Noble, and Kennedy Schwandt. Garrett Snodgrass, Lincoln Petersen, and Dylan Council were the top spellers of their grades. We are so proud of all the students who chose to enter and challenge themselves to learn to spell some difficult words! They spent much time outside of the school day learning those words. Sheryl Kennedy coordinated the spelling bee.

CONGRATULATIONS!

The Camanche Elementary Sumdog math team dominated the competition in the Iowa Winter Sumdog math competition. The team earned 1st place against other elementary school teams from throughout the state. Owen Steines had the top individual score. Brantley Weller, Kennedy Schwandt, Max Brown, Jocelyn Bark, Miguel Gojon, Kyler Jenness, Hattie Noble, Hunter Bray, and River Murphy were in the top 10 based on their excellent scores. In this competition, the students had to solve 1000 math problems at their own skill level. The problems had to be solved within a week. Additional team members are Luke Anderson, Garrett Carter, Halley Hansen, Aly Mahoney, Josiah Shaffer, and Keegan Totten. The team is coached by Sheryl Kennedy

FROM MRS. MUNSON

Students are learning to be great problem solvers! An important thing to remember is that everyone makes mistakes. We try to teach students: “If I did it, I admit it”. It is a great skill to learn to take responsibility for our actions and behavior. This life skill is critical in the success of our relationships and careers. In addition, knowing how to make a formal apology is crucial to move forward from our mistake. Practice making a formal apology with your student with these steps:

If I tell a lie, do something wrong, hurt someone else, or don’t follow through with a promise, I need to make a FORMAL APOLOGY:

1.        Admit to myself (and others, if needed) that I’ve done something wrong.

2.     Look at the person I’ve hurt.

3.      Say his or her name and say, “I’m sorry for…” (state what I did)

4.      Tell the person or people that I hurt that I will not do it again – and mean it!

5.      Make restitution (how can I make it up to the person or people that I hurt? Make a plan and follow through!)

Here are a few books to read with your student on apologizing:

·       Think Before You Act: Learning About Self-Discipline and Self Control by Regina Burch

·       Winnie the Pooh I’m Really Sorry

·       What Were You Thinking: A Story About Learning to Control Your Impulses by Bryan Smith
